Now that you’ve given up gluten, you’re probably thinking gorging yourself on cake, scones and dainty little sandwiches of an afternoon is a thing of a past.
Well you need to think again, because we’ve found some amazing places to enjoy a totally gluten-free afternoon tea in London town, perfect for any budget!
Here’s our top 5:
The Modern Pantry, 47-48 St John’s Square, EC1
Clerkenwell restaurant the Modern Pantry is sleek, chic and totally Kiwi. Expect unusual takes on classic dishes, and a fair few ingredients you might not have come across before at this reasonably priced tea. The Modern Pantry’s gluten free afternoon tea includes lotus root crisp, a Darjeeling and pink peppercorn scone and a green tea dacquoise. Go on, be adventurous!
Gluten Free Afternoon Tea: £19.50 per person
The English Tea Room, Brown’s Hotel, 33 Albemarle Street, W1
A gluten free afternoon tea at The English Tea Room, Brown’s Hotel features home-made sweets including apple and lemon jelly, a chocolate cup of blueberries and shamelessly dense brownie, bread, clotted cream and jam. Shamelessly dense sounds good to us.
Gluten Free Afternoon Tea: £41.50
The Pantry at 108, 108 Marylebone Lane, W1
Head to posh Marylebone for the bounciest gluten free scones, and an afternoon tea with sherry jelly, a mini superfood salad, protein flapjack and ground-almond-based sponges. Who said afterooon tea couldn’t be healthy, eh?
Gluten Free Afternoon Tea: £28-£38
The Drawing Rooms, The Ampersand Hotel, 10 Harrington Road, SW7
The Ampersand Hotel offers a more contemporary take on the age old tradition, with the introduction of Scandinavian-style open sandwiches and marshmallowy-textured coconut mousse. Don’t miss the gluten free scones though, these are things of beauty!
Gluten Free Afternoon Tea: £27.50
Claridge’s, 49 Brook Street, W1
Whilst this may be an afternoon tea for special occasions only, Claridge’s does promise a gluten free tea with finger sandwiches made with the best gluten-free bread and a melt-in-the-mouth cheese and parsley scone. We trust them, too!
Gluten Free Afternoon Tea: £50 per person
