Live Dosa, Chelmsford Essex

Live Dosa is a small family run restaurant that recently opened near Chelmsford station in Essex. The restaurant’s owners know their stuff when it comes to gluten free diets and were happy to talk us through which dishes were suitable.

The owners take pride in being the first Keralan (South Indian) restaurant in Chelmsford; they serve traditional Keralan food which, we’re pleased to report, is almost all suitable for gluten free diets.

The biggest surprise was that many of the battered dishes were made with corn flour and rice flour, so were fine for us to eat. We also got a huge selection of bread dishes to choose from – which never normally happens!

We began with a dosa, filled with chicken – and gluten free! It was served with a selection of sauces and tasted great.

Next up was a starter of chicken, deep fried with spices.

For mains we tried the tandoori chicken, one of the best versions of this we’ve had!

It was accompanied by ‘uthappam’ a gluten free type of Indian bread made by cooking ingredients in a batter. Unlike a dosa, which is crisp and crepe-like, uttapam is a thick pancake, with toppings cooked right into the batter. The plain version was great to dip in our vegetable curries (all gluten free!)

Kerala a state in southern India is known for its beaches and its backwaters, this makes it a fisherman’s home and seafood lovers’ paradise. The backwaters also make the place fertile to grow coconut, rice and various other spices.

This is what gives the cuisine a unique taste. The taste which is reflected in Live Dosa’s menu as they blend and incorporate these spices and cooking methods to present the traditional flavours of Kerala.

If you’re in Chelmsford any time soon pop by Live Dosa – the place doesn’t look so smart but the food is delicious, and great value too. You can see the full menu here.

That all looks and sounds really good! My one issue here is that their menu doesn’t specify what’s gluten free and what isn’t in any way. Their ‘About Us’ page says many of the dishes are gluten free, but without seeing the menu beforehand I’d have to call to check what they did that my family and I could eat. Since I’m not local, this isn’t an issue, but it could be a barrier for other coeliacs who would eat there.

    • Agreed, the menu could be a lot more informative! Not just for allergies either, tonnes of dishes are a little mysterious as to what’s in them! The waiters are really helpful though and knew exactly what was in everything and what I could have, so it was good 🙂

I’m Coeliac and LiveDosa is one of my favourite places in town!

We popped by one evening, planning ahead, to ask if they did cater for Coeliacs and wow, we were in for a pleasant surprise! A few days later we went for our first Dosa and were hooked!

As I know that the staff are so good at understanding coeliac needs I love that the menu is so mysterious and do not worry that I will get something I shouldn’t have. My only problem is I love the dishes that I usually order and don’t always try something different!

We have been very happy customers for over a year now and I would tell anyone local to Chelmsford or just visiting to give it a try with confidence!
